Aggregate Industries Contracting is a national contracting business for all types of pavement surfacing and construction.
It specialises in providing solutions for major and complex private and Government-funded infrastructure projects, local authority asset renewals, highways and junction improvement schemes, airports, ports, rail and racetracks, industrial and commercial car parks and hard standings, and spine roads for housing developments.
It is part of Aggregate Industries, the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of construction and building materials including aggregates, asphalt, cement and ready-mixed concrete. It operates one of the largest and most dynamic highways contracting businesses in the UK, dedicated to successful delivery of customer needs. With six regional contracting offices at strategic locations across the UK, it is able to service contracts nationally.
As a multi-million pound turnover business, tendered contracts account for a significant proportion of its revenue. Keeping track of new opportunities, having visibility of where submitted tenders are at in the bidding process and tracking the outcome of each one is paramount to ensuring the business continues to maintain good cash flow and a healthy pipeline of work.
Giving its 13-strong senior management board a holistic overview of the process, based on accurate, real-time data, was the challenge it set Quiet Storm.
We created a project mapping application which plots out the projects it has bid for, where they are located and at which stage they are at, to give the management team the latest information they need to scope out future work and projects.
Planning the pipeline
The application, which is built around an excel database but can be accessed via an online dashboard, maps out all the projects the business is working on, what it has planned for the future and what future opportunities are out there and can be bid for.
Each project is colour-coded according to a priority, and enables the user to drill down into each individual project to view key project and financial data and run of a series of reports, based on a host of parameters, including date, sector, size, value and projected income.
It gives the management team the ability to pull off a set of figures, on a weekly basis, about where the business is, financially, at any given time, so they can allocate resource and priority accordingly to ensure each one is profitable and that the business pipeline, across the short-, medium- and long-term, remains healthy.

“Because of the sheer breadth of construction projects we get involved in, having an easy way to keep track of all the data that goes with it to give our senior management team a clear, reliable and holistic view of the business is crucial.
“The dashboard that Quiet Storm has created for us enables us to do just that. It pulls together all the key data and enables us to produce a wide range of management reports focusing on different aspects of the business, so we are always up-to-date on where we are at and can plan for the future accordingly. The application has made a difficult task extremely simple and has become a fundamental part of our business planning.”
